Copyright © 2026 Pavlos Zafiropoulos, sole trader (ατομική επιχείρηση) trading as Phigram, publisher of Liefwork, Athens, Greece (ΑΦΜ/VAT: EL142939055) (the "Licensor"). Contact: info@liefwork.com. (Full registered postal address available on request.)
The canonical text of this License is published at https://liefwork.com/obsidian-plugin/license.
This software is source-available, not open source. You may read, run, and modify it as set out below; you may not use it to build a competing product. Individual, non-profit, and educational use is free; internal use by any other organization requires a commercial license. Please read the full terms.
1. Definitions
- "Software" — the Liefwork for Obsidian plugin, together with the Liefwork rendering/layout engine, viewer, and all other source code, build artifacts, and accompanying files distributed with it in the Licensor's source repository or otherwise made available by the Licensor under this License. Code the Licensor serves as part of the liefwork.com website is not made available under this License.
- "You" — the individual or entity exercising rights under this License.
- "Client" — a single natural person, or a single legal entity, that engages You to perform bespoke work under §2.4. Each affiliate or group company is a separate Client.
- "Competing Product" — any product, application, or service that (a) incorporates, is derived from, or reproduces a substantial part of the Software (including its layout/rendering engine), and (b) is offered or distributed to third parties as a general-purpose product or service (i.e. beyond your own personal or internal use, or a Bespoke Delivery under §2.4), and (c) competes with, or serves as a substitute for, any current or publicly announced commercial offering of the Licensor — including the Liefwork for Obsidian plugin, any standalone Liefwork application, and any hosted or cloud ("SaaS") offering. For the avoidance of doubt, a Competing Product is not limited to software that runs on or interoperates with Obsidian; a standalone application or online service that competes with a Licensor offering is equally covered.
- "Pro Features" — the optional extras of the Software that the Licensor designates as requiring a valid Pro license key (cosmetic additions and removal of the in-app reminder; the core Software is free and fully functional within the limits of §2.2).
- "Attribution Notice" — the statement: "Based on Liefwork (https://liefwork.com), © Pavlos Zafiropoulos, used under the Liefwork Source-Available License (https://liefwork.com/obsidian-plugin/license)."
2. Grant of rights (Permitted Use)
Subject to your compliance with this License, the Licensor grants you a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to:
1. view, read, audit, and study the Software; 2. run and use the Software (i) for your own individual use — as a natural person, for any purpose, including your own work — and (ii) for the internal purposes of a non-profit organization or an accredited educational institution. Internal use by any other organization requires a separate commercial license from the Licensor, beyond a one-time evaluation of up to sixty (60) days in aggregate. (The core Software is free within these limits; Pro Features require a key per §3.); 3. modify the Software and run your modified copy for your own personal or internal use, within the same limits as §2.2; 4. make a "Bespoke Delivery": modify the Software and use it to perform bespoke paid work for a Client (e.g. consulting, setup, custom corals), including installing or deploying the modified copy for that single Client's own internal use — provided ALL of the following conditions are met: - (a) the modified copy is materially specific to that Client. Delivering the same or a substantially similar modified copy to more than one Client is not bespoke work but distribution of a general-purpose product, prohibited under §4 without a commercial license; - (b) you deliver to the Client, together with the modified copy, a complete copy of this License and written notice that the delivered software is derived from Liefwork and remains subject to this License; - (c) you retain all copyright, license, trademark, and attribution notices in the source, and include the Attribution Notice (§1) in a reasonably prominent, user-visible place in the deliverable or its accompanying documentation (e.g. a settings pane, about screen, or README); - (d) you do not distribute the modified copy to anyone other than that Client, do not offer the Software as a general-purpose product or service, and do not thereby create a Competing Product (§1); - (e) the modified copy remains subject to this License in the Client's hands, including the internal-use limits of §2.2 (a Client outside the free individual/non-profit/educational categories requires its own commercial license); the Client may not further distribute it.
3. Pro Features (license-key gate)
The core Software is free and fully functional within the limits of §2.2; no license key is required for any core feature. Pro Features require a valid license key obtained from the Licensor via an optional one-time €5.99 purchase (a fixed-price sale of a digital good — see the EULA). Bypassing, disabling, circumventing, or assisting others to circumvent the license-key gate is prohibited. It is likewise prohibited to modify the Software — or to procure, distribute, or install a modification — so as to enable any Pro Feature, or to remove or suppress the in-app reminder, without a valid key, whether or not the license-key gate itself is altered.
4. Restrictions (Non-Compete)
Without a separate written commercial license from the Licensor, you may NOT:
1. use the Software, or any substantial part of it, as a component of a Competing Product (§1) — on any platform, whether as an Obsidian (or similar-app) plugin, a standalone application, or a hosted/online service; 2. redistribute the Software, modified or unmodified, as a general-purpose product or service to third parties, or make it available to third parties as a hosted or managed service; 3. distribute, publish, or otherwise make available to third parties any modified copy or derivative of the Software — whether under the Licensor's marks or renamed under any other name (the sole exception is a Bespoke Delivery to a single Client meeting every condition of §2.4; modification for your own use is permitted per §2.3); 4. remove, alter, or obscure any copyright, license, trademark, or attribution notices, including the Attribution Notice in a Bespoke Delivery.
5. Contributions
Contributions to the Software are accepted only under the Licensor's Contributor License Agreement (CLA), published as CLA.md in the source repository and at https://liefwork.com/obsidian-plugin/cla, granting the Licensor the rights necessary to use, distribute, and relicense the contribution. By submitting a contribution you agree to the CLA.
6. Reservation of commercial rights
All rights not expressly granted are reserved. All commercial exploitation rights in the Software remain exclusively with the Licensor.
7. Trademarks
"Liefwork" and associated names and logos are trademarks of the Licensor and are not licensed under this License. You may not use them to promote, distribute, or pass off any modified copy, derivative, or other product as the Licensor's, or to suggest sponsorship or endorsement by the Licensor. Truthful, non-confusing nominative references are permitted — e.g. stating that your services or a Bespoke Delivery are "for Liefwork" or "based on Liefwork", and including the Attribution Notice required by §2.4. Renaming a modified copy creates no right to distribute it — distribution of modified copies to third parties is prohibited under §4 (the sole exception being a Bespoke Delivery under §2.4), whether under the Licensor's marks or any other name.
8. No warranty
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
9. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE LICENSOR SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES, OR OTHER LIABILITY ARISING FROM OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR ITS USE. Nothing in this License limits liability that cannot be excluded under applicable Greek or EU law.
10. Termination
This License terminates automatically upon any breach, in particular of §3 (key gate) or §4 (non-compete) — except that a breach consisting solely of unlicensed organizational use under §2.2 may be cured within thirty (30) days of notice by obtaining a commercial license or ceasing the use. On termination you must cease use and distribution of the Software.
11. Governing law and jurisdiction
This License is governed by the laws of Greece, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. The courts of Athens, Greece shall have exclusive jurisdiction, subject to any mandatory consumer-protection rules of the user's country of residence.
12. Future open-source conversion
On the date four (4) years after the release date of any given version of the Software, that version will additionally be made available under the Apache License, Version 2.0. The release date of each version is the date recorded for that version in the CHANGELOG (or release notes) published with the Software. Each released version converts on its own four-year anniversary; the Licensor may convert a version earlier at its discretion but never later.
